How to Calculate Your Body Mass Index (bmi)

What is the Body Mass Index?

BMI is a statistical measurement which compares a person's weight and height.

Adolphe Quelet, a Belgium statistician developed the formula for the Body Mass Index (BMI). It is also referred to as the Body Mass Indicator and is an internationally used measurement for obesity. BMI is a statistical measurement which compares a person's weight and height. I must stress that is does not measure your percentage of body fat,  although it is a useful way to estimate a healthy body weight based on how tall a person is.

How do you calculate your BMI?

You can calculate you BMI very easily using the below formula, you will only need to know you height and your weight.



Imperial

Weight will need to be in pounds and height will need to be in inches.
Multiple the weight (in pounds) by 703 and then divide the result by the height (in inches) sqaured.

Metric

Weight will need to be in kilograms and height will need to be in meters.
Divide the weight (in kilograms) by the height (in meters) squared.

The result is the BMI value in Kilogram /square meter.

Attention: The BMI is by no means absolute. Your BMI is just an indication of your fitness and can vary depending on your genes and body frame.
